Hajj Step-by-Step Guide

Preparation for Umrah

  • It is recommended that one should perform ghusl and the men are permitted to apply attar before assuming ihram.

Umrah Rituals

  • At the meeqat, make the intention for 'umrah and say:

    لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ عُمْرَة

    Labbayk Allahumma umrah

  • If you fear that you may not be able to complete the 'umrah (for any reason), say:

    اللَّهُمَّ مَحِلِّي حَيْثُ حَبَسْتَنِي

    Allahumma mahillee haythu habastanee

  • Facing the Qibla, say:

    اللَّهُمَّ هَذِهِ عُمْرَةٌ لا رِيَاءَ فِيْهَا وَلَا سُمْعَة

    Allahumma hathihee umrah laa riyaa feehaa wa laa sum'ah

  • From this point onwards, it's recommended to recite and repeat the talbiyah:

    لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الحّمْدَ والنِّعْمَةَ، لَكَ والمُلْكُ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ

    Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka laa shreeka laaka labbayk, innal hamda wan n'imata, laka wal mulk, la shreeka lak

Entering Masjid al-Haram

  • When entering masjid al haram, enter with the right foot and say:

    اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ وَسَلِّمْ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ

    Allahumma salli wa sallim alaa Muhammadin, Allahummaf tah lee abwaaba rahmateka

  • You must be in a state of wudhu to perform the tawaaf, men are to uncover their right shoulder. The ihram should be placed under the right armpit and thrown over the left shoulder.
  • Stop reciting the talbiyah before you begin making tawaaf around the Ka'bah

Tawaf Around Ka'bah

  • Approach Al-Hajar Al-Aswad, face and point to it and say:

    الله أَكْبَر

    Allahu Akbar

  • If possible kiss Al-Hajar Al-Aswad, if not touch it with your hand and then kiss your hand, if not do point 9 above.
  • Make 7 circuits of the Kabah (anti clockwise), the first 3 are to be done swiftly, the remaining 4 are to be done at normal pace.
  • Between the Yemeni corner and Al-Hajar Al-Aswad, recite

    رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

    Rabbanaa aatena fid dunya hasanatan wa fil akhirati hasantan wa qinaa 'adhaa ban naar

After Tawaf

  • Upon completing the tawaaf, cover the right shoulder and go to a location behind Maqaam Ibraheem and recite:

    وَاتَّخِذُوْا مِنْ مَّقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ مُصَلًّى

    Watti khi-thuu mim maqaami Ibraheema musallaa

  • Then one should offer two rakah naafilah behind Maqaam Ibraheem. In the first rakah reciting Soorah al Kaafiroon and in the second reciting Soorah al Ikhlaas
  • One should then drink some zamzam and pour water over their heads.
  • Now return to the Hajar al Aswad and say

    الله أَكْبَر

    Allahu Akbar

Sa'i Between Safa and Marwah

  • Now approach Safaa, at the foot of the mountain/hill recite:

    إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللهِ فَمَنْ حَجَّ الْبَيْتَ أَوِ اعْتَمَرَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ أَن يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا وَمَن تَطَوَّعَ خَيْرًا فَإِنَّ اللهَ شَاكِرٌ عَلِيمٌ

    أَبْدَأُ بِمَا بَدَأَ اللهُ بِهِ

    Innas safaa wal marwata min sha'aa-irillah fa man hajjal bayta aw-ita-mara falaa ju-naa-ha alay-hi ayy-at tawwafa bi-him-aa wa man ta-tawwa'a khayran fa inn-Allaha shaakirun 'aleem

    Ab-da-u bi-maa ba-da Allaahu bihi

  • Climb the mountain/hill and at the top turn towards the Ka'bah and recite:

    الله أَكْبَر الله أَكْبَر، الله أَكْبَر، لَا إِلهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ المُلْكُ وَلَهُ الحَمْدُ يُحْيِى و يُمِيْتُ وهُوَ عَلى كُلِّ شَيءٍ قَديرٌ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ أَنْجَزَ وَعْدَهُ، وَنَصَرَ عَبْدَهُ وَهَزَمَ الأَحْزَابَ وَحْدَهُ

    Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar

    Laa ilaaha ill-Allahu wah da-hu laa shareeka la-hu, la-hul mulku wa lahul-hamdu yuh-yee wa yu-meet wa huwa 'alaa kulli shay-in qadeer, la i-laa-ha ill-Allahu wah-da-hu an-jaza w'adahu, wa nasara abdahu wa hazamal ahzaa-ba wah-dah

  • This is to be done 3 times, after the first and second recitation make du'aa of your choice.
  • Descend Safaa and make your way towards Marwah.
  • One should run between the green posts.
  • At the foot of Marwah repeat the above.
  • Complete 7 circuits, where one circuits is between Safaa and Marwah. I.e. you'll finish at Marwah.

Completion of Umrah

  • Once you have completed, then upon leaving the Haram, men should say:

    اللّهُمَّ إِنّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِك

    Allahumma innee as-aluka min fad-lik

  • Finally men are to shave or cut their hair, women to cut a third finger length of hair
  • You have now completed the rights of umrah and free to remove your ihram

8th Dhul Hijjah - Hajj Begins

  • Between Fajr and Dhur re-enter the state of Ihraam and recite

    لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ بِحَجّ

    Labbayk Allahumma bijah

  • If you fear that you may not be able to complete the 'hajj (for any reason), say:

    اللَّهُمَّ مَحِلِّي حَيْثُ حَبَسْتَنِي

    Allahumma mahillee haythu habastanee

  • While standing and facing the Qibla, recite

    اللَّهُمَّ هَذِهِ حَجَّةٌ لا رِيَاءَ فِيْهَا وَلَا سُمْعَة

    Allahumma hathihee hajjatan laa riyaa feehaa wa laa sum'ah

  • From this point onwards, it's recommended to recite and repeat the talbiyah.

    لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الحّمْدَ والنِّعْمَةَ، لَكَ والمُلْكُ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ

    Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka laa shreeka laaka labbayk, innal hamda wan n'imata, laka wal mulk, la shreeka lak

  • Also recite

    لَبَّيْكَ إِلَهَ الْحَقّ

    Labbayka ilahal haqq

  • Proceed to Mina and pray, Dhur, Asr, Maghrib and Isha as a traveller but don't combine

9th Dhul Hijjah - Day of Arafah

  • Pray Fajr in Mina and after sunrise proceed towards Arafah
  • You may choose to recite the talbiyah:

    لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الحّمْدَ والنِّعْمَةَ، لَكَ والمُلْكُ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ

    Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka laa shreeka laaka labbayk, innal hamda wan n'imata, laka wal mulk, la shreeka lak

  • You may also recite:

    الله أَكْبَر

    Allahu Akbar

  • Listen to the khutbah, pray Dhur and Asr at the time of Dhur (combined)
  • Remain in Arafah until sunset, then proceed towards Muzdalifah
  • In Muzdalifah, pray Maghrib and Isha (combined)

10th Dhul-Hijjah - Day of Sacrifice

  • Leave Muzdalifah for Mina after it has become very light
  • Stone at Jamrat Al-'Aqabah with 7 pebbles
  • Sacrifice if you are one who is sacrificing
  • Shave or cut hair (men shave completely or trim, women cut a fingertip length)
  • Perform Tawāf Al-Ifādah
  • Perform Sa'ī if it is required of you

11th-13th Dhul-Hijjah

  • Stay in Mina the 11th, 12th, and 13th nights of Dhul Hijjah
  • Stone the 3 jamarāt on all days after zawāl (midday)
  • If you wish to hasten your leave, you may leave Mina before sunset on the 12th after stoning
  • Those who remain should stay until the 13th and stone the jamarāt after zawāl
  • Make Tawāf al-Widā' the last thing you do before leaving Makkah

Essential Duas for Hajj

General Forgiveness Dua

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي خَطِيئَتِي وَجَهْلِي وَإِسْرَافِي فِي أَمْرِي وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي

"Allāhumma ighfir lī khaṭīʾatī wa jahlī wa isrāfī fī amrī wa mā anta aʿlamu bihī minnī"

"O Allah, forgive me for my mistakes, my ignorance, my excess in my affairs, and what You know better than me."

Dua for Righteous Life

اللَّهُمَّ أَصْلِحْ لِي دِينِي الَّذِي هُوَ عِصْمَةُ أَمْرِي، وَأَصْلِحْ لِي دُنْيَايَ الَّتِي فِيهَا مَعَاشِي، وَأَصْلِحْ لِي آخِرَتِي الَّتِي فِيهَا مَعَادِي

"Allāhumma aṣliḥ lī dīnī alladhī huwa ʿiṣmatu amrī, wa aṣliḥ lī dunyāya allatī fīhā maʿāshī, wa aṣliḥ lī ākhiratī allatī fīhā maʿādī"

"O Allah, correct for me my religion, which is the safeguard of my affair; my worldly life, which is my livelihood; and my Hereafter, where I will return."

Dua for Protection

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَفْوَ وَالْعَافِيَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ

"Allāhumma innī as-aluka al-ʿafwa wal-ʿāfiyata fī al-dunyā wal-ākhirah"

"O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and the Hereafter."

Dua for Acceptance

اللَّهُمَّ تَقَبَّلْ مِنِّي وَاجْعَلْهُ حَجًّا مَبْرُورًا وَسَعْيًا مَشْكُورًا

"Allāhumma taqabbal minnī wajʿalhu ḥajjan mabrūran wa saʿyan mashkūrā"

"O Allah, accept (this Hajj) from me and make it an accepted Hajj and a rewarded effort."
